How Was It Done?

Complete restoration of these traditional Castilian chairs:

1. First, we removed the rush seat, which was already badly sagging and damaged.

2. Once the frame was stripped, we proceeded to clean it thoroughly.

3. We sanded the entire piece using an electric sander, a Dremel, and a sanding sponge to remove any remaining varnish and stain.

4. We applied paint stripper gel to the more difficult areas.

5. We cleaned the piece with solvent.

6. We stained the wood, first testing the colour on a sample board. To apply the stain, we used either a brush or cotton wool. We spread the stain evenly and rubbed it in circular motions until we achieved the desired tone.

7. Once the stain had dried, we proceeded to renew the seat. We created wooden supports and screwed them into each corner to provide a solid base for the new seat.

8. On top of these supports, we placed a cushion made from a 2 cm MDF base, which we had previously reupholstered using high-density blue foam covered with a fine cotton fabric and finished with the linen fabric chosen by the client. The cushion was then fitted onto the wooden supports previously secured to the frame and finished with matching decorative trim.

9. Once the chairs were finished, we applied three coats of wax, carefully working around the fabric to avoid staining it.
