How Was It Done?

Cleaning of tools:

1. We cleaned the wooden parts with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.

2. We wrapped all the wood in cling film to protect it from contact with the iron.

3. We submerged the iron in rust remover, leaving it in contact with the solution for 24 hours.

4. Once the rust began to loosen, we scrubbed every corner with a wire brush.

5. Once the rust had been removed, we painted the iron with Oxirón, a specialist paint that protects against oxidation. In this case, we chose the “Forge” finish.

6. We left it to dry for 24 hours and then applied a second coat.

7. Once the iron was completely dry (after 1–3 days of drying), we removed the cling film from the wood.

8. We sanded the wood. As these were very old pieces, we used 120–280 grit sandpaper and worked with great care. The aim was to remove any remaining traces of varnish, smooth the wood, and open the grain for the next step.

9. Conditioning: We prepared a mixture of equal parts olive oil and vinegar and applied it to the entire surface with a brush.

10. Once dry, we applied a clear Xylazel exterior wood stain.

11. We left it to dry for approximately 6 hours.

12. We thoroughly polished the tools with a cotton cloth.

13. We finished the process by applying a coat of wax.
